Gill – I’ve enjoyed reading your post on a number of levels.
You make a really valid point about the advantages of being ‘your own boss’ and being able to take responsiblity for achieving work/life balance. We moved from the other end of the country earlier this year and, working on my own, it has been one long, hard journey to build up a network of contacts and peers again. At times I did question – do I still want to work on my own? Or do I want to take the ‘easy’ route and go back to ‘formal’ employment? Fortunately, I chose to stick with it and I’m really glad I did. Your post, for me, is very timely and has been really re-energising – a fresh reminder of all the positives that independence brings.
Your post also made me smile for another reason – In doing what I do, I often work with people who have gone through the steps you list and as part of that process, they’ve arrived at the decision to use someone like me. I pick up some of the Bs and mostly all of the Cs.
One of the biggest compliments I ever received was from a client’s husband who said, ‘You know, since x started working with you, she’s been so much easier to live with.’
It always makes me smile to think that in helping others to maintain their balance, I actually achieve my own balance, too.
